A hand-painted oil canvas needs very little maintenance. The protective varnish applied in the studio is enough for normal indoor conditions; the main things to avoid are direct sunlight, moisture and heat.
Hanging
Hang away from direct sunlight and from radiators, fireplaces or air-conditioning vents. UV and repeated temperature swings are what fade and crack oil paint over time. Use a hook rated for at least twice the canvas weight, and keep the canvas level.
Cleaning
Dust lightly with a clean, dry, soft brush or a lint-free cloth. Never use water, solvents, glass cleaner or household sprays on the painted surface. If a mark will not lift, ask a professional conservator rather than trying to scrub it.
Framing and stretching
The extra 2-inch blank border around the composition is for stretching and framing. We can stretch the canvas onto wooden bars at no extra charge, and can arrange custom framing — email us with the painting and the frame style you have in mind.
