Arcueil by Henri Matisse is one of those images that never dates. Our studio recreates it as a hand painted oil painting — textured, color-rich, and ready to hang as canvas wall art in a dining room, study, or reception area.
1899
Oil on paper laid down on craddled panel
Arcueil - suburban town just south of Paris - was painted in 1899, a year of significant breakthroughs for Matisse, for it was in this year that he surpassed many of the influences to which he had formerly submitted. In the present work, it is clear that Matisse has moved through the Impressionist phase. Light is crucial, but more so are the bold areas of colour that prefigure the Fauve palette that Matisse would increasingly adopt over the forthcoming years. In fact, although the public and the critics would discover the new approach of working in pure colour during the Salon d’Automne of 1905, the research undertaken in this direction by Matisse, Vlaminck and Derain among others had begun before the turn of the century. The present work testifies unquestionably to this.
"The chief function of color should be to serve expression as well as possible…my choice of colour is based on feeling, on the experience of my emotion.
"H. Matisse quoted in J. Flam, Matisse, A Retrospective, New York, 1988, p. 80.
Every hand painted oil painting in this fine art series is finished on artist-grade canvas and checked against the original before it leaves the studio.
We use a 100% hand-painted process: stretched artist-grade canvas, layered oil pigment, and a final protective varnish. There are no inkjet prints or mechanical reproductions in this collection — just a painted fine art artwork made to order.
Build a dining room gallery wall around this fine art oil painting, or let it stand alone as a single statement. The hand painted canvas finish keeps the fine art composition looking intentional in both classic and contemporary rooms.
