Autumn Landscape with a Flock of Turkeys - Jean-Francois Millet - Landscape Oil Painting
Product Overview
Autumn Landscape with a Flock of Turkeys - Jean-Francois Millet - Landscape Oil Painting suits both traditional and modern interiors. As a landscape oil painting, it works as a standalone focal point or as part of an entryway gallery wall, and unlike a print it is genuinely hand painted in oils.
About the Artwork
1872-73
Oil on canvas
31 7/8 x 39 in. (81 x 99.1 cm)
Metropolitan Museum of Art, United States.
In a letter of February 18, 1873, to his patron Frédéric Hartmann, Millet wrote that he had nearly completed this painting and hoped to deliver it to his dealer Durand-Ruel within the week: "It is a hillock, with a single tree almost bare of leaves, and which I have tried to place rather far back in the picture. The figures are a woman seen from behind and a few turkeys. I have also tried to indicate the village in the background on a lower plane." The setting is near Barbizon, where Millet lived for most of his career; the distinctive tower of the neighboring hamlet of Chailly-en-Bière is visible in the distance.
Collectors often choose this landscape image when searching for landscape oil painting that feels substantial rather than decorative or disposable.
How It Is Made
Trained artists work in stages — underpainting, mid-tones, highlights, and detail — using traditional oils on canvas. Because nothing is printed, every hand painted oil painting has its own subtle texture and depth.
