Looking for fine art oil painting with real brushwork? Behold the Man (Ecce Homo) is reproduced by hand in oils on artist-grade canvas after James Tissot. The result is a piece of refined oil painting wall decor that anchors a dining room and rewards a closer look.
1886-1894
Opaque watercolor over graphite on gray wove paper
Brooklyn Museum, United States.
Exclaiming "Behold the man!," Pilate shows the beaten and bloodied Christ to the crowds. The people gathered in the court below urge his execution, with pointed fingers raised in accusatory gestures.
On the loggia before the assembled crowd, Pilate—convinced of Jesus' innocence and impressed by his dignity, according to Tissot's account—publicly washes his hands on the loggia before the square, symbolically distancing himself from the execution to follow.
As dining room wall art, the piece pairs naturally with other refined wall art and with warm neutrals, timber, and soft natural light.
Materials matter for refined wall decor. That is why this piece is built on artist-grade canvas with lightfast oil colors, applied by hand rather than output from a printer, and sealed for long-term display.
Style it over a fireplace, behind a reading chair, or along a staircase. Wherever it goes, this refined oil painting wall decor adds the layered color that only a hand painted canvas provides.
