Jesus Goes Up Alone onto a Mountain to Pray by James Tissot

Jesus Goes Up Alone onto a Mountain to Pray - James Tissot - Canvas Wall Art

About This Piece

Jesus Goes Up Alone onto a Mountain to Pray - James Tissot - Canvas Wall Art suits both traditional and modern interiors. As a landscape oil painting, it works as a standalone focal point or as part of an entryway gallery wall, and unlike a print it is genuinely hand painted in oils.

The Story Behind the Painting

1886-1894

Seeking solitude for prayer following the miracle of the loaves and fishes, Jesus retreats to the peak of a mountain. Tissot's commentary observes that such solitary moments precede many significant episodes in Jesus' ministry, including the Ordaining of the Apostles, the Sermon of the Beatitudes, and the Transfiguration, noting Jesus' preference for "lofty spots," elevations near to God, for these meditative respites.

In this dramatic image, Tissot sets Jesus against a night sky, his brilliant white robes backlit by the glow of the stars and the crescent moon.

Our artists reproduce this landscape composition in oil on canvas by hand, preserving the tonal range that makes landscape oil painting so sought after for an entryway.

Materials & Craftsmanship

From primer to varnish, the work is done manually on artist-grade canvas. The absence of digital printing is deliberate: it keeps the landscape brushwork visible and gives the vintage oil painting wall decor a museum-like finish.
