Judas Goes to Find the Jews - James Tissot - Hand Painted Oil Painting

About This Piece

From the first sketch to the final varnish, Judas Goes to Find the Jews is made by hand. Based on James Tissot's original. This romantic oil painting wall decor is crafted on artist-grade canvas for anyone who wants fine art oil painting with the character of an original.

Composition & Subject

Judas va trouver les Juifs
1886-1894
Opaque watercolor over graphite on gray wove paper
Brooklyn Museum, United States.

In two short verses, Mark recounts the deal struck between Judas and the chief priests, who will give him money to betray Jesus. Here, Judas negotiates his fee (he is shown with his fingers raised).

With his suspicious backward glance at the exchange between Judas and the priests, the unidentified foreground figure draws the viewer's attention to the proceedings.

The fine art subject is rebuilt stroke by stroke in oil, giving the finished canvas the depth expected of romantic oil painting wall decor.

How It Is Made

Trained artists work in stages — underpainting, mid-tones, highlights, and detail — using traditional oils on canvas. Because nothing is printed, every hand painted oil painting has its own subtle texture and depth.
