1910
Oil on canvas
Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, United States.
On July 21, 1910, Hassam wrote to the artist J. Alden Weir that he had been in Paris for two weeks and found it dirty and noisy. He added, “I have made a 14th July from the balcony here”— evidently referring to this painting, which depicts the street below the H?tel l’Empire (located at 7, rue Daunou, near the Opéra) during Bastille Day celebrations. For Hassam, the holiday would have recalled the Fourth of July, perhaps prompting him to exaggerate the number of American flags displayed. The canvas anticipates the Flag series Hassam began in New York six years later, which included "Avenue of the Allies, Great Britain, 1918" (67.187.127).
The figurative subject is rebuilt stroke by stroke in oil, giving the finished canvas the depth expected of timeless oil painting wall decor.
This is a genuine hand painted oil painting, not a canvas print. Our painters match the palette of July Fourteenth, Rue Daunou by eye and build up the figurative forms in thin layers, which is what gives the finished portrait oil painting its luminosity.
Hang this portrait oil painting above a sofa, console, or bed to give an entryway an instant focal point. Its timeless palette works with both minimalist and period interiors, and the piece also makes a considered gift for housewarmings, weddings, and art lovers.
