In 1908, artists and romantic partners Vasily Kandinsky and Gabriele Münter enjoyed a sojourn in the bucolic village of Murnau in the Bavarian Alps. They were charmed by the experience and went on to paint many scenes featuring the picturesque town and its environs.

Kandinsky’s “Murnau: Street with Women,” pictured here, dates to the initial year of their visit. This painting still shocks today with its bold brushstrokes and jarring palette–blue, green, red, and yellow all clash and vibrate together like cymbals. In the lower right corner, a trio of women gazes at the viewer as if startled during their daily stroll. The vivid colors, disassociated from representational forms, reflect Kandinsky’s response to the French Fauves, whose radical work he had seen firsthand in Paris. Kandinsky had visited the city when his own art–paintings, woodcuts, and decorative pieces–were included in the 1906 Salon d’Automne. The large scale of “Murnau: Street with Women”—over 2 by 3 feet–captures some of the awe that Kandinsky must have felt in the aftermath of his trip to Paris, as if learning to see anew.
