About the Artwork

Oil on canvas
80 x 102 cm

“Portrait of a Mastiff Labrador in a Landscape” is an exceptional work by Rosa Bonheur belonging to the Realism art movement, an era marked by a drive to depict subjects truthfully without artificiality and avoiding speculative fiction and supernatural elements. This work is categorized under the genre of animal painting, which focuses on the realistic portrayal of animals. The artwork is an exemplification of Bonheur’s skilled rendering of animal subjects within their environments.

The artwork showcases a solitary Mastiff Labrador lying down in a natural setting. The dog’s physicality is captured with a palpable sense of weight and texture; its coat is depicted with detailed brushwork, highlighting the sheen of the fur and the play of light across its form. The animal’s facial expression is one of alertness and nobility, with a certain introspection that draws the viewer’s gaze. Surrounding the central figure is a landscape rendered in soft hues. The broad, open sky provides a serene backdrop, while the ground where the dog rests appears to be a mix of grass and earth, suggesting an outdoor scene perhaps at the edge of a wild or rural landscape. Rosa Bonheur’s careful attention to the anatomy of the dog as well as the atmospheric quality of the setting is characteristic of the Realist movement’s focus on accurate depiction and the honest conveyance of the physical world.

Our artists reproduce this figurative composition in oil on canvas by hand, preserving the tonal range that makes portrait oil painting so sought after for a hallway.

100% Hand Painted on Canvas

From primer to varnish, the work is done manually on artist-grade canvas. The absence of digital printing is deliberate: it keeps the figurative brushwork visible and gives the vintage oil painting wall decor a museum-like finish.
