Looking for fine art oil painting with real brushwork? Potato Planters is reproduced by hand in oils on artist-grade canvas after Jean-Francois Millet. The result is a piece of heritage oil painting wall decor that anchors an entryway and rewards a closer look.
le Planteur de pomme de terres
c.1861
Oil on canvas
82.5 x 101.3 cm (32 1/2 x 39 7/8 in.)
Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, United States.
In Millet's time, many people considered potatoes unfit food even for animals, but these peasants are planting potatoes for themselves to eat. "Why should the work of a potato planter," wrote Millet, "be less interesting or less noble than any other activity?" Millet gives the harsh reality of their lives beauty and dignity, placing his solidly modelled, harmonious figures before a hazy landscape just beginning to green in the spring sun. The presence of the donkey and the sleeping child under the tree may recall another poor working family, that of Joseph, Mary, and Jesus.
Every hand painted oil painting in this fine art series is finished on artist-grade canvas and checked against the original before it leaves the studio.
We use a 100% hand-painted process: stretched artist-grade canvas, layered oil pigment, and a final protective varnish. There are no inkjet prints or mechanical reproductions in this collection — just a painted fine art artwork made to order.
Build an entryway gallery wall around this fine art oil painting, or let it stand alone as a single statement. The hand painted canvas finish keeps the fine art composition looking intentional in both classic and contemporary rooms.
