Russian Dancers 4 - Edgar Degas - Canvas Oil Painting brings gallery-caliber art into everyday spaces. This portrait oil painting is a 100% hand painted oil painting on canvas, created for buyers who want genuine impressionist canvas wall art instead of a mass-produced poster or paper print.
circa 1899
Pastel on tracing paper
Private Collection.
One of Degas’s great late works, Russian Dancers (circa 1899), is on loan to the Getty Museum as the centerpiece of a special installation of late 19th-century French pastels.
In this pastel, Degas celebrates the rambunctious abandon, bright colors, and elaborate folk costumes of Ukrainian peasant dancers, very much in contrast to the ethereal ballerinas for which he is famous. To Degas, the Russian peasants embodied the primitive and visceral human urge to dance. He captured this exuberance by applying layers of pure color on paper, artfully combining the immediacy of drawing with the vibrancy of painting.
Russian Dancers is joined by a selection of works from the permanent collection that depict Paris’s flashy popular entertainments. These include Pierre Bonnard’s Le Moulin Rouge (1889) and At the Circus: Entering the Ring (1899) by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec.
The figurative subject is rebuilt stroke by stroke in oil, giving the finished canvas the depth expected of impressionist oil painting wall decor.
This is a genuine hand painted oil painting, not a canvas print. Our painters match the palette of Russian Dancers 4 by eye and build up the figurative forms in thin layers, which is what gives the finished portrait oil painting its luminosity.
Hang this portrait oil painting above a sofa, console, or bed to give a bedroom an instant focal point. Its impressionist palette works with both minimalist and period interiors, and the piece also makes a considered gift for housewarmings, weddings, and art lovers.
