Saint Luke - James Tissot - Hand Painted Oil Painting brings gallery-caliber art into everyday spaces. This fine art oil painting is a 100% hand painted oil painting on canvas, created for buyers who want genuine heritage canvas wall art instead of a mass-produced poster or paper print.
Saint Luc
1886-1894
Opaque watercolor over graphite on gray wove paper
Brooklyn Museum, United States.
For his narrative of the life of Christ, Tissot created a "harmony" of the Gospels, combining the separate accounts of Jesus' life attributed to the apostles Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. These four New Testament texts differ from one another in theological emphasis and tone. A harmony, a literary form traced to the second-century Christian writer Tatian, seeks to reconcile the differences among the four Gospels and to piece together one continuous chronology of Jesus' life, verse by verse.
Tissot created his own distinctive narrative through this synthesizing process, producing five "chapters" derived from the Gospel sources: the Holy Childhood, the Ministry, Holy Week, the Passion, and the Resurrection. He paid homage to the individual Gospel writers by painting a portrait of each.
Very occasionally, in order to fill out the narrative, the artist illustrated an episode from the Apocrypha (early Christian writings not included in the New Testament), though he was always careful to select passages consistent with the depiction of the Holy Family in the Gospels.
As entryway wall decor, the piece pairs naturally with other heritage wall art and with warm neutrals, timber, and soft natural light.
We use a 100% hand-painted process: stretched artist-grade canvas, layered oil pigment, and a final protective varnish. There are no inkjet prints or mechanical reproductions in this collection — just a painted fine art artwork made to order.
Build an entryway gallery wall around this fine art oil painting, or let it stand alone as a single statement. The hand painted canvas finish keeps the fine art composition looking intentional in both classic and contemporary rooms.
Whether the search term is fine art oil painting, entryway wall decor, or heritage oil painting wall decor, this hand painted canvas delivers the same thing: a real painted surface, made to your chosen dimensions.
