In Scène de rue, Paris, Bonnard’s fascination with the spectacle of urban modernity is very apparent. Montmartre and the streets of Paris served the artist as a colourful source of inspiration. The bustle of the Parisian crowd and the wonderful vibrancy of the night scene in the present work is captured in small passages of colour, depicting standing figures in their evening dress.
Henry Dauberville writes of Bonnard’s street scenes: ‘Ses scènes de la rue portant la marque d’un humour empreint de joie de vivre: chevaux, chiens, vendeuses, marchandes des quatre-saisons, toute une jeunesse rieuse qui fourmille dans le quartier des Batignolles et jusqu’à la Place Clichy, tout est peint avec une gentillesse un peu moqueuse. Premières émotions artistiques d’un jeune peintre qui veut exprimer la gaieté de ce Paris 1900, animé vivant, bon enfant’ (J. and H. Dauberville, op. cit., vol. I, pp. 36 & 37).
