The Blind in the Ditch (Les aveugles dans le fosse) by James Tissot

The Blind in the Ditch (Les aveugles dans le fosse) - James Tissot - Oil Painting Wall Decor

At a Glance

The Blind in the Ditch (Les aveugles dans le fosse) - James Tissot - Oil Painting Wall Decor suits both traditional and modern interiors. As a fine art oil painting, it works as a standalone focal point or as part of a dining room gallery wall, and unlike a print it is genuinely hand painted in oils.

The Story Behind the Painting

1886-1894
Opaque watercolor over graphite on gray wove paper
Brooklyn Museum, United States.

This painting illustrates a parable in which Jesus likens those who ignore his teachings to the blind leading the blind. Holding on to one another but without informed guidance, the blind are vulnerable to danger.

In his commentary, Tissot asserts that during his stay in Jerusalem he observed the following practice: "In the streets of Jerusalem numbers of blind men may still sometimes be seen, walking one behind the other in files, and clinging to each other, under the leadership of one of their number who is familiar with the obstacles to be avoided, and knowing every nook and corner of the town."

Every hand painted oil painting in this fine art series is finished on artist-grade canvas and checked against the original before it leaves the studio.

How It Is Made

Oil on canvas remains the reference standard for traditional reproductions. Our artists apply pigment by hand, blending the fine art tones directly on the surface for depth that a printed fine art oil painting simply cannot match.
