From the first sketch to the final varnish, The Calling of Saint Matthew is made by hand. Based on James Tissot's original. This classic oil painting wall decor is crafted on artist-grade canvas for anyone who wants fine art oil painting with the character of an original.

Jesus further shows his acceptance of those rejected by society by inviting Matthew a publican, or toll collector into his ministry, as he passes his booth. Not only were these tax collectors considered unscrupulous, but they were also particularly loathed by devout Jews for their status as representatives of the ruling Romans. Tissot has included camels and the hint of a wide-arched gate to underscore Matthew's location at a geographical (and perhaps, spiritual) crossroads, as well as adding an Eastern flourish.
After Christ calls Matthew to his teachings, he takes a meal in the home of his new disciple, an act that occasions the suspicion of devout passersby. In answer to questions of his motives, Jesus merely replies that, like a physician, he heals the sick, not the healthy.
The fine art subject is rebuilt stroke by stroke in oil, giving the finished canvas the depth expected of classic oil painting wall decor.
Expect subtle, hand-made variation rather than factory uniformity. Each fine art canvas is painted with oils, allowed to cure properly, and inspected before it is approved for shipment.
Wondering where fine art oil painting looks best? Try a home office mantel, a dining room sideboard, or a hallway gallery wall. The fine art subject reads clearly from a distance and rewards close viewing up near.
Order The Calling of Saint Matthew as a hand painted oil painting on canvas and add lasting classic character to your home office. Custom sizes, a digital proof before dispatch, and secure worldwide shipping are included.
