The Chief Priests Take Counsel Together by James Tissot is one of those images that never dates. Our studio recreates it as a hand painted oil painting — textured, color-rich, and ready to hang as canvas wall art in a gallery wall, study, or reception area.
Les princes des prêtres se consultent
1886-1894
Opaque watercolor over graphite on gray wove paper
Brooklyn Museum, United States.
Following Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem, the chief priests and scribes meet to discuss their response to the challenge of his increasing popularity: they resolve to find a way to destroy him.
Once more, Tissot focuses on the costumes of the priests, with their elaborately woven and draped textiles (fringed with fur, in the case of the white-bearded priest at center), and the lavish building materials of the Temple complex, with its marble columns topped with carved capitals. The luxuriousness of their attire and of the Temple itself stands in marked contrast to Jesus and his followers, who celebrate the meek and the powerless.
The fine art subject is rebuilt stroke by stroke in oil, giving the finished canvas the depth expected of refined oil painting wall decor.
Materials matter for refined wall decor. That is why this piece is built on artist-grade canvas with lightfast oil colors, applied by hand rather than output from a printer, and sealed for long-term display.
Style it over a fireplace, behind a reading chair, or along a staircase. Wherever it goes, this refined oil painting wall decor adds the layered color that only a hand painted canvas provides.
