For collectors searching fine art oil painting, The Clos Cezanne at Vaucresson is a dependable choice. Painted in layered oils on canvas after Edouard Vuillard, this post-impressionist work reads equally well as classic canvas wall art and as a thoughtful housewarming gift.
1920
Distemper on canvas
151 cm (59.45 in.) x 110.7 cm (43.58 in.)
Metropolitan Museum of Art, United States.
This painting was begun in 1920 at Vaucresson, a residential suburb west of Paris, where Vuillard’s friends Lucy and Josse (Jos) Hessel had recently purchased the house depicted in the background. Jos, a partner in the art firm of Bernheim-Jeune, had become Vuillard's dealer in 1912. His wife was one of Vuillard's great loves; their relationship spanned more than three decades, until the artist's death in 1940. The woman in a housedress standing at right is Lucy's cousin Marcelle Aron. Lucy kneels across from her, at left, camouflaged by one of the large rosebushes that serve as a decorative screen in the foreground.
Collectors often choose this fine art image when searching for fine art oil painting that feels substantial rather than decorative or disposable.
From primer to varnish, the work is done manually on artist-grade canvas. The absence of digital printing is deliberate: it keeps the fine art brushwork visible and gives the post-impressionist oil painting wall decor a museum-like finish.
As gallery wall art, this canvas brings color and texture without visual noise. It scales well from a small study to a large gallery wall feature wall, and it is a reliable choice when shopping for fine art oil painting as a gift.
