The Goose Girl at Gruchy by Jean-Francois Millet

The Goose Girl at Gruchy - Jean-Francois Millet - Traditional Canvas Wall Art

Product Overview

Looking for portrait oil painting with real brushwork? The Goose Girl at Gruchy is reproduced by hand in oils on artist-grade canvas after Jean-Francois Millet. The result is a piece of traditional oil painting wall decor that anchors a gallery wall and rewards a closer look.

Composition & Subject

1854-56
Oil on canvas
The Davies Sisters Collection.

Although painted at Barbizon in 1854-56, this scene was inspired by a visit which Millet made to his birthplace in the summer of 1854. Behind the goose girl, the geese are watering in a stream which runs down the steep hillside to the sea. The houses of Gruchy, a hamlet near Cherbourg, are visible in the left background. This highly finished pastoral scene is of a type which was highly popular with British collectors. Acquired by J.McGavin of Glasgow in 1878, it was purchased by Gwendoline Davies in 1909.

As gallery wall art, the piece pairs naturally with other traditional wall art and with warm neutrals, timber, and soft natural light.

Materials & Craftsmanship

Oil on canvas remains the reference standard for traditional reproductions. Our artists apply pigment by hand, blending the figurative tones directly on the surface for depth that a printed portrait oil painting simply cannot match.
