For collectors searching wildlife oil painting, The Horse Thief is a dependable choice. Painted in layered oils on canvas after Frank Tenney Johnson, this heritage work reads equally well as classic canvas wall art and as a thoughtful housewarming gift.

Oil on canvas
26 x 38 inches
According to Harold McCracken, “The ranchers and cowboys made a practice of hunting down the rustlers as they would predatory animals.… Furthermore, among the most active rustlers and horse thieves were some of the roughest, toughest, and most dastardly men who ever rode the range in a saddle. Their whole purpose was based on plans to outsmart the most expert of the legitimate old-time cowboys; and this added considerable zest and determination to apprehend the rustlers and eliminate them from the scene.”
Every hand painted oil painting in this wildlife series is finished on artist-grade canvas and checked against the original before it leaves the studio.
We use a 100% hand-painted process: stretched artist-grade canvas, layered oil pigment, and a final protective varnish. There are no inkjet prints or mechanical reproductions in this collection — just a painted wildlife artwork made to order.
Build a living room gallery wall around this wildlife oil painting, or let it stand alone as a single statement. The hand painted canvas finish keeps the wildlife composition looking intentional in both classic and contemporary rooms.
