Les vendeurs chassés du Temple
1886-1894
Opaque watercolor over graphite on gray wove paper
Brooklyn Museum, United States.
Jesus drives the merchants from the Temple, among them moneychangers as well as those who sell animals for sacrifice and food for worshippers. He scatters their goods—in a dramatic flurry of flapping doves' wings—as he wields a whip devised from his own belt, Tissot notes in his text. (This last detail comes from the account in John, though Tissot chose not to cite those verses in his Bible.)
The sheer bulk of merchants with their wares and animals had grown so large, Tissot explains, that, for want of room, they had invaded Solomon's Porch and the Court of the Gentiles, rendering the cisterns impure and the silence required for prayer impossible.
Every hand painted oil painting in this fine art series is finished on artist-grade canvas and checked against the original before it leaves the studio.
Each canvas is painted entirely by hand with professional oil paints on artist-grade cotton canvas. No printing, giclée, or digital imaging is used at any stage, so the surface keeps the slight relief and color variation of real brushwork.
This fine art oil painting wall decor is equally at home in a residence, a boutique hotel, or a professional office. Its elegant character makes it a safe, distinctive gift for anyone furnishing an entryway.
Order The Merchants Chased from the Temple as a hand painted oil painting on canvas and add lasting elegant character to your entryway. Custom sizes, a digital proof before dispatch, and secure worldwide shipping are included.
