Oil on canvas

The Davies Sisters Collection.
Begun in 1871-72 but left unfinished, this haunting scene depicts a Norman peasant family in their farmyard. It embodies a primitivism which may draw upon Egyptian sculpture and Quattrocento paintings seen by Millet in the Louvre. The British painter Sickert commented: 'The sublime man and his stolid spouse face the spectator with all the gravity and symmetry of two caryatids, while the child essays, a baby Samson, the strength of the pillars of his house'. Margaret Davies purchased this work in 1911.
Our artists reproduce this figurative composition in oil on canvas by hand, preserving the tonal range that makes portrait oil painting so sought after for a living room.
From primer to varnish, the work is done manually on artist-grade canvas. The absence of digital printing is deliberate: it keeps the figurative brushwork visible and gives the vintage oil painting wall decor a museum-like finish.
As living room wall decor, this canvas brings color and texture without visual noise. It scales well from a small study to a large living room feature wall, and it is a reliable choice when shopping for portrait oil painting as a gift.
