The Pieta (Mary Lamenting the Dead Christ) - Giovanni Battista Gaulli - Entryway Wall Decor
Product Overview
Upgrade your walls with The Pieta (Mary Lamenting the Dead Christ) - Giovanni Battista Gaulli - Entryway Wall Decor. Every fine art reproduction is painted entirely by hand, so the surface carries the depth and variation of an original oil painting rather than the flatness of a digital canvas print.
Composition & Subject
1667
Oil on canvas
183 cm (72 in) x 116 cm (45.7 in)
Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Antica - Palazzo Barberini, Rome, Italy.
The canvas is identifiable as the "Dead Christ in the arms of the weeping Virgin with two little angels", for which the painter received payment on May 25, 1667. The painting was carried out for Cardinal Flavio Chigi, along with another canvas of the Assumption of the Virgin. It is a fundamental work for the career of Gaulli, and looks back to the famous Pietà of Annibale Carracci. Gaulli, however, translates the carracciesque language to achieve one of the highest examples of "baroque classicism". His synthesis also shows the influence of Van Dyck's art.
As entryway wall decor, the piece pairs naturally with other vintage wall art and with warm neutrals, timber, and soft natural light.
Materials & Craftsmanship
From primer to varnish, the work is done manually on artist-grade canvas. The absence of digital printing is deliberate: it keeps the fine art brushwork visible and gives the vintage oil painting wall decor a museum-like finish.
