Choose The Procession in the Streets of Jerusalem as a hand painted oil painting and skip the compromise of printed wall decor. Based on James Tissot's original. Our artists rebuild the cityscape composition stroke by stroke, producing vintage canvas wall art with lasting color depth.
Le cortège dans les rues de Jérusalem
1886-1894
Opaque watercolor over graphite on gray wove paper
Brooklyn Museum, United States.
Sitting astride a donkey, Jesus enters Jerusalem during the Passover season in triumph, receiving the acclamation of his followers, who call him the prophet of Nazareth and place garments or other textiles in his path, a homage typically reserved for kings. The multitudes also register their respect with bowed heads, outstretched arms, and clapping hands. Several of his followers celebrate his arrival with palm fronds, a symbol of victory in Jewish tradition. These palms subsequently gave the name to the Sunday that begins Holy Week and leads to the Passion.
In the foreground, the figures of two young boys from Tissot's drawings are repeated several times in a variety of poses and gestures, an almost stop-action, cinematic effect as their claps and shouts lend a sense of dynamism to the scene.
As dining room wall art, the piece pairs naturally with other vintage wall art and with warm neutrals, timber, and soft natural light.
From primer to varnish, the work is done manually on artist-grade canvas. The absence of digital printing is deliberate: it keeps the cityscape brushwork visible and gives the vintage oil painting wall decor a museum-like finish.
As dining room wall art, this canvas brings color and texture without visual noise. It scales well from a small study to a large dining room feature wall, and it is a reliable choice when shopping for cityscape oil painting as a gift.
