The Story Behind the Painting

1952
Oil on canvas
The Davies Sisters Collection.

Early in his career, Millet painted a remarkable series of female nudes. This cabinet painting of 1847-49 depicts the lovers Paolo and Francesca, whose doomed souls are described in Dante's Inferno 'across the sky in long procession trailing'. Millet may have been influenced by Ary Scheffer's academic painting of this subject which was well received at the 1835 Salon. Formerly in the distinguished collection of Henri Rouart, this work was purchased by Gwendoline Davies in 1912.

Every hand painted oil painting in this fine art series is finished on artist-grade canvas and checked against the original before it leaves the studio.

100% Hand Painted on Canvas

This is a genuine hand painted oil painting, not a canvas print. Our painters match the palette of The Shooting Stars by eye and build up the fine art forms in thin layers, which is what gives the finished fine art oil painting its luminosity.
