Choose The Solemn Pledge Taos Indians as a hand painted oil painting and skip the compromise of printed wall decor. Based on Walter Ufer's original. Our artists rebuild the fine art composition stroke by stroke, producing heritage canvas wall art with lasting color depth.
1916
Oil on canvas
101.9 x 92.1 cm (40 1/8 x 36 1/4 in.)
Art Institute of Chicago, United States.
In The Solemn Pledge, Walter Ufer portrayed three generations of Native Americans, combining a bright, saturated palette with sensitively modeled figures. The white robes worn by the boy and two of the men suggest that the group is considering pledging the boy to kiva instruction, a Pueblo tradition of education in ceremonial practices, history, and language. The painting’s subject alludes to the necessary deliberation among early 20th-century Native communities about holding fast to traditions amid governmental assimilation efforts, an issue with ongoing relevance. Ufer, who trained at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and in Munich, was an active member by 1917 of the Taos Society of Artists, a group of white artists dedicated to painting the region’s people and landscape.
The fine art subject is rebuilt stroke by stroke in oil, giving the finished canvas the depth expected of heritage oil painting wall decor.
We use a 100% hand-painted process: stretched artist-grade canvas, layered oil pigment, and a final protective varnish. There are no inkjet prints or mechanical reproductions in this collection — just a painted fine art artwork made to order.
Build a dining room gallery wall around this fine art oil painting, or let it stand alone as a single statement. The hand painted canvas finish keeps the fine art composition looking intentional in both classic and contemporary rooms.
