The Strike of the Lance - James Tissot - Fine Art Oil Painting brings gallery-caliber art into everyday spaces. This fine art oil painting is a 100% hand painted oil painting on canvas, created for buyers who want genuine heritage canvas wall art instead of a mass-produced poster or paper print.
Le coup de lance
1886-1894
Opaque watercolor over graphite on gray wove paper
Brooklyn Museum, United States.
To confirm that Christ was dead, one of the Roman centurions pierced his side with a spear, releasing a flow of blood and water from the body. Calling on the Fathers of the Church, Tissot sees in this incident "the image of many very touching mysteries." Most notably, he alludes to the sacramental significance of water and blood, respectively, in the Christian rites of Baptism and the Eucharist.
Every hand painted oil painting in this fine art series is finished on artist-grade canvas and checked against the original before it leaves the studio.
We use a 100% hand-painted process: stretched artist-grade canvas, layered oil pigment, and a final protective varnish. There are no inkjet prints or mechanical reproductions in this collection — just a painted fine art artwork made to order.
Build a home office gallery wall around this fine art oil painting, or let it stand alone as a single statement. The hand painted canvas finish keeps the fine art composition looking intentional in both classic and contemporary rooms.
