Nothing softens a dining room like a painted surface. Trouble On The Pony Express by Frank Tenney Johnson arrives as a hand painted oil painting on canvas, offering the fine art detail, soft gradients, and tactile finish that fine art oil painting shoppers look for.
c. 1910-20
Oil on canvas
36.25 x 28.25 inches
In 1904, Frank Tenney Johnson realized his childhood ambition to see the West, filling his reference files with oil sketches and hundreds of photographs of the subjects that would preoccupy him—cowboys, Mexicans, and native people of the Southwest. In 1912 he joined Charles Russell on a sketching expedition to the Blackfoot Reservation east of Glacier National park in Montana and fondly recalled camping with him. Charlie “liked my work and said so emphatically.” But Nancy Russell was another matter; Johnson remembered her coolness—she did not cotton to competitors. Johnson’s considerable reputation was based on his fluid painterly oils and his dramatic use of color. He favored nocturnes and sun-splashed scenes capturing the light early in the morning and late in the day when shadows and warm orange tones soften the floodlit clarity of mid-day.
Our artists reproduce this fine art composition in oil on canvas by hand, preserving the tonal range that makes fine art oil painting so sought after for a dining room.
Expect subtle, hand-made variation rather than factory uniformity. Each fine art canvas is painted with oils, allowed to cure properly, and inspected before it is approved for shipment.
Wondering where fine art oil painting looks best? Try a dining room mantel, a dining room sideboard, or a hallway gallery wall. The fine art subject reads clearly from a distance and rewards close viewing up near.
