Nothing softens an entryway like a painted surface. Around the Fish by Paul Klee arrives as a hand painted oil painting on canvas, offering the wildlife detail, soft gradients, and tactile finish that wildlife oil painting shoppers look for.
1926
Oil and tempera on canvas mounted on cardboard
Museum of Modern Art, United States.
A garnished platter of fish is surrounded by a constellation of seemingly disparate elements—a cross, full and crescent moons, an exclamation point, a forked red flag—all hovering against a dark abyss. Some of Klee's iconography grew out of his teaching; the arrow, which he initially used as a teaching tool to indicate force and emotion for his students at the Bauhaus, here points confrontationally towards a stylized head, possibly alluding to human consciousness. Although they are often enigmatic, Klee believed his personal hieroglyphs and figurative elements had wider connotations: "The object grows beyond its appearance through our knowledge of its inner being, through the knowledge that the thing is more than its outward aspect suggests."
The wildlife subject is rebuilt stroke by stroke in oil, giving the finished canvas the depth expected of abstract oil painting wall decor.
We use a 100% hand-painted process: stretched artist-grade canvas, layered oil pigment, and a final protective varnish. There are no inkjet prints or mechanical reproductions in this collection — just a painted wildlife artwork made to order.
Build an entryway gallery wall around this wildlife oil painting, or let it stand alone as a single statement. The hand painted canvas finish keeps the wildlife composition looking intentional in both classic and contemporary rooms.
