Choose Blue Nude (Souvenir de Biskra) as a hand painted oil painting and skip the compromise of printed wall decor. Based on Henri Matisse's original. Our artists rebuild the figurative composition stroke by stroke, producing fauvist canvas wall art with lasting color depth.
1907
Oil on canvas
Baltimore Museum of Art, United States.
Matisse was working on a sculpture, Reclining Nude I, when he accidentally damaged the piece. Before repairing it, he painted it in blue against a background of palm fronds. The nude is hard and angular, both a tribute to Cézanne and to the sculpture Matisse saw in Algeria. She is also a deliberate response to nudes seen in the Paris Salon - ugly and hard rather than soft and pretty. This was the last Matisse painting bought by Leo and Gertrude Stein.
Our artists reproduce this figurative composition in oil on canvas by hand, preserving the tonal range that makes portrait oil painting so sought after for a dining room.
This is a genuine hand painted oil painting, not a canvas print. Our painters match the palette of Blue Nude (Souvenir de Biskra) by eye and build up the figurative forms in thin layers, which is what gives the finished portrait oil painting its luminosity.
Hang this portrait oil painting above a sofa, console, or bed to give a dining room an instant focal point. Its fauvist palette works with both minimalist and period interiors, and the piece also makes a considered gift for housewarmings, weddings, and art lovers.
Order Blue Nude (Souvenir de Biskra) as a hand painted oil painting on canvas and add lasting fauvist character to your dining room. Custom sizes, a digital proof before dispatch, and secure worldwide shipping are included.
