The Story Behind the Painting

1780
Oil on canvas
255 cm (100.39 in.) x 154 cm (60.63 in.)
Museo Nacional del Prado, Madrid, Spain.

Goya was influenced by the Spanish baroque and especially the paintings of Velasquez when he exhibited this painting for entry into the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando in 1780. The artist combined the classical model with his knowledge of anatomy to create a new realism for a subject that had been painted for centuries.

Collectors often choose this fine art image when searching for fine art oil painting that feels substantial rather than decorative or disposable.
