Nothing softens a living room like a painted surface. Still Life by Henri Matisse arrives as a hand painted oil painting on canvas, offering the still life detail, soft gradients, and tactile finish that still life oil painting shoppers look for.
ca. 1905
Oil on canvas
Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, United States.
Matisse painted this still life sometime between late 1905 and the beginning of 1906, when he still retained Neo-Impressionist blocks of color but also began to construct his pictures with flatter areas of color. With rhythmic brushstrokes, Matisse rendered space and objects alike in flat color planes. The green, white, and blue plate, the round red pitcher, and the yellow coffeepot are typical of pottery produced in the south of France. Similarly, the vegetables look as if they had just tumbled out of Matisse's shopping basket after a trip to the local market.
As living room wall decor, the piece pairs naturally with other fauvist wall art and with warm neutrals, timber, and soft natural light.
Expect subtle, hand-made variation rather than factory uniformity. Each still life canvas is painted with oils, allowed to cure properly, and inspected before it is approved for shipment.
Wondering where still life oil painting looks best? Try a living room mantel, a dining room sideboard, or a hallway gallery wall. The still life subject reads clearly from a distance and rewards close viewing up near.
