“Tempest on the Sea at Night,” painted by Ivan Aivazovsky in 1849, is an eminent work of art from the Romanticism movement. Executed in oil on canvas, the artwork measures 89 x 106 cm and is classified under the genre of marina.

The artwork portrays a dramatic seascape illuminated by the ethereal light of the moon, breaking through tumultuous clouds. The scene captures a solitary ship battling ferocious waves in the midst of a stormy night, epitomizing the sublime power of nature and the perilous condition faced by sailors. The luminous reflections on the water and the dynamic depiction of the tempestuous sky evoke a profound sense of both awe and vulnerability. Ivan Aivazovsky’s masterful technique beautifully conveys the raw energy and atmospheric intensity of the sea at night, making this piece a timeless representation of human endeavor against nature’s immense forces.
