Nothing softens a home office like a painted surface. The Casino de Nice with Palm Trees and Basins by Raoul Dufy arrives as a hand painted oil painting on canvas, offering the landscape detail, soft gradients, and tactile finish that landscape oil painting shoppers look for.
Oil on canvas
(P. Courthion cité in Raoul Dufy, Genève, 1951, p. 66).
Raoul Dufy moved to Nice in 1926-1927, after a trip to Morocco with his friend, the avant-garde fashion designer, Paul Poiret. The well-considered choice of this town overlooking the Mediterranean was motivated by the "need to have a certain quality of light constantly before the eyes, brilliant and shimmering." (P. Courthion quoted in Raoul Dufy, Geneva, 1951, p. 66). So during the Roaring Twenties the artist tirelessly painted this seaside town with its stylised palm trees and elegant figures. In this work, Dufy painted le casino de la Jetee-Promenade, a neo-Byzantine style building constructed on stilts in the late 19th century, a subject which would remain a favourite with him until the end of the 1940s. Although this building was in fact destroyed by the Germans in 1944, that did not stop the artist depicting it even until 1947 and often under the stunning firework display that ended the carnaval.
Characteristic of the distinctive style established by the artist in the mid 1920’s, this painting primarily consists of broad horizontal or vertical bands of arbitrary bright colours, divorced from the drawing made with the brush. This palette produced an infinite variety of startling blues and orange-reds, emphasising the dazzling Mediterranean light.

Materials matter for fauvist wall decor. That is why this piece is built on artist-grade canvas with lightfast oil colors, applied by hand rather than output from a printer, and sealed for long-term display.
Style it over a fireplace, behind a reading chair, or along a staircase. Wherever it goes, this fauvist oil painting wall decor adds the layered color that only a hand painted canvas provides.
