On 22 April 1800 the King wrote that he wished Goya to go to his summer palace at Aranjuez to portray the whole royal family. The group and no less than nine separate portraits were done (some of them possibly sketches). The result, with its freedom and richness of handling and the detachment of its analysis, is perhaps the most astonishing thing in the whole of portraiture.
