The Fountain in Hyeres by Raoul Dufy

The Fountain in Hyeres - Raoul Dufy - Canvas Oil Painting

About This Piece

The Fountain in Hyeres - Raoul Dufy - Canvas Oil Painting suits both traditional and modern interiors. As a fine art oil painting, it works as a standalone focal point or as part of a living room gallery wall, and unlike a print it is genuinely hand painted in oils.

About the Artwork

La fontaine à Hyères, 1927
Oil and gouache on canvas
31 3/4 x 25 5/8 in. (80.6 x 65 cm.)

Raoul Dufy first painted Hyères in 1927, and the largest and most striking of the Hyères paintings of that year is the present lot. La Fontaine à Hyères demonstrates Dufy’s gift of beautifully capturing the essence of a location in both composition and vivid colour. The work shows two of the town’s most iconic features, its avenue of palm trees receding up the hill towards the vieille ville in the distance, and the imposing Godillot fountain in the foreground. The trees and the fountains are rendered in Dufy’s typically striking azure blues and verdant greens, and the eye is drawn beyond the fountain and trees to the red and white of L’église Saint-Paul on the horizon.

Every hand painted oil painting in this fine art series is finished on artist-grade canvas and checked against the original before it leaves the studio.

How It Is Made

From primer to varnish, the work is done manually on artist-grade canvas. The absence of digital printing is deliberate: it keeps the fine art brushwork visible and gives the fauvist oil painting wall decor a museum-like finish.
