Three Generations - Charles Marion Russell - Canvas Wall Art is part of our hand painted oil painting collection from the Charles Marion Russell Paintings selection. Each canvas is worked by a trained artist, then inspected before dispatch — a practical route to owning vintage wall decor at a fraction of gallery pricing.
1897
Oil on canvas.
While initially appearing to be a straightforward family portrait, Three Generations can also be seen as a statement on the toll that time took on the fair Indian maidens Russell found so attractive. White observers commonly claimed that ceaseless drudgery quickly stripped the Indian women (and the pioneer white women) of their charms and made them old well beyond their years. Reflected in Russell's depiction of the three generations is one of the many concerns which may have haunted him when he considered staying with the Bloods. What would happen when youthful infatuation wore off, and the young mother sitting by the stream had aged in only a few years into the stooped, toothless grandmother beaming down on her grandchild? The old crone represented Russell's vision of the last stage of Indian womanhood and it was not an alluring picture.
Our artists reproduce this fine art composition in oil on canvas by hand, preserving the tonal range that makes fine art oil painting so sought after for a living room.
From primer to varnish, the work is done manually on artist-grade canvas. The absence of digital printing is deliberate: it keeps the fine art brushwork visible and gives the vintage oil painting wall decor a museum-like finish.
As living room wall decor, this canvas brings color and texture without visual noise. It scales well from a small study to a large living room feature wall, and it is a reliable choice when shopping for fine art oil painting as a gift.
Whether the search term is fine art oil painting, living room wall decor, or vintage oil painting wall decor, this hand painted canvas delivers the same thing: a real painted surface, made to your chosen dimensions.
