Kirchner Museum Davos, Davos, Switzerland.
The Tinzenhorn is a 3,173-metre limestone peak east of Davos, visible from many points in the Landwasser valley, and it appears repeatedly in Kirchner's Swiss work. This canvas, painted in 1919–1920, shows it from the Zügenschlucht gorge near the hamlet of Monstein — the mountain filling most of the picture plane, the gorge falling away at the left edge, the whole scene pressed into an unnaturalistic closeness that is entirely characteristic of how Kirchner looked at the Alps. He was not interested in the picturesque mountain view. He was interested in the formal problem of translating a vertical geological structure into flat paint.
The colour in Tinzenhorn, Zügenschlucht bei Monstein is violet, orange, and a dark cold blue — colours that have no direct equivalent in what the eye actually sees looking at a limestone mountain, but that carry the sensation of altitude and exposure with real accuracy. Kirchner had been developing this approach to Alpine colour since arriving in the Davos region in 1917, and by 1919–1920 he had worked out a system where the colour relationships create a kind of thermal and light intensity specific to high mountains. The Kirchner Museum Davos holds several versions of this peak and this gorge; this painting is among the most resolved, the mountain compressed almost to the point of abstraction while remaining entirely recognisable to anyone who has stood in that valley.
As living room wall decor, the piece pairs naturally with other expressionist wall art and with warm neutrals, timber, and soft natural light.
Each canvas is painted entirely by hand with professional oil paints on artist-grade cotton canvas. No printing, giclée, or digital imaging is used at any stage, so the surface keeps the slight relief and color variation of real brushwork.
This fine art oil painting wall decor is equally at home in a residence, a boutique hotel, or a professional office. Its expressionist character makes it a safe, distinctive gift for anyone furnishing a living room.
In short: Tinzenhorn - Zugenschlucht bei Monstein - Ernst Ludwig Kirchner - Oil Painting combines an expressionist composition, a 100% hand painted oil painting process, and the flexibility of made-to-order canvas sizes — a dependable choice for fine art oil painting and living room wall decor.
