circa 1890
Oil on canvas
State Museum of New Western Art, Moscow.
Monet had a house at Giverny, where this painting and many of his famous landscape series were produced. There is a whole group of canvases which take as their motif a field of poppies.
Attracted by the vision of the fluttering, rippling colours of the moving carpet of flowers, the artist had already turned to this theme. In the Hermitage canvas he concentrates all his attention of conveying an impression of the massy surface swept sideways by the wind, and totally rejects any attempt to depict details. The modesty of the motif, which is characteristic of most of Monet's works, in no ways detracts from its poetry and the feeling that nature herself breathes within the picture.
The still life subject is rebuilt stroke by stroke in oil, giving the finished canvas the depth expected of impressionist oil painting wall decor.
This is a genuine hand painted oil painting, not a canvas print. Our painters match the palette of Poppy Field by eye and build up the still life forms in thin layers, which is what gives the finished still life oil painting its luminosity.
Hang this still life oil painting above a sofa, console, or bed to give a hallway an instant focal point. Its impressionist palette works with both minimalist and period interiors, and the piece also makes a considered gift for housewarmings, weddings, and art lovers.
