About This Piece

The Story Behind the Painting

Corner of the Garden at Montgeron
circa 1876
Oil on canvas
175 x 194 cm (68.9 x 76.4 in)
The State Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg, Russia.

Claude Monet painted Corner of the Garden at Montgeron in 1876. Department store magnate Ernest Hoschede commissioned Monet to paint four decorative panels for the interior of his grand new home, Chateau de Rottembourg at Montgeron.

Monet spent the summer there, finding motifs on the beautifully landscaped grounds and painting outdoors with bright spots of color in a wide range of tone. Despite his newly made fortune in department store speculation, Hoschede quickly fell into financial difficulty and was unable to pay for the paintings.

As living room wall decor, the piece pairs naturally with other impressionist wall art and with warm neutrals, timber, and soft natural light.

Materials & Craftsmanship

Materials matter for impressionist wall decor. That is why this piece is built on artist-grade canvas with lightfast oil colors, applied by hand rather than output from a printer, and sealed for long-term display.
