For collectors searching wildlife oil painting, Rouen Cathedral at the End of Day, Sunlight Effect is a dependable choice. Painted in layered oils on canvas after Claude Monet, this impressionist work reads equally well as classic canvas wall art and as a thoughtful housewarming gift.
1893-1894
Oil on canvas
39-3/8 x 25-5/8 in
Musée Marmottan, France.
Claude Monet painted the Rouen Cathedral at the End of Day, Sunlight Effect (1893-1894) so the bright sunlight on the facade of the cathedral made the surface dissolve into patterns of light and color. Claude Monet used bleached-out hues to capture the almost blinding effect.
In his letters home he described the effort it took to keep working so as to capture an effect before the light changed. The letters also reveal that he missed his wife Alice and Giverny but that his subject required intense and constant attention.
As entryway wall decor, the piece pairs naturally with other impressionist wall art and with warm neutrals, timber, and soft natural light.
From primer to varnish, the work is done manually on artist-grade canvas. The absence of digital printing is deliberate: it keeps the wildlife brushwork visible and gives the impressionist oil painting wall decor a museum-like finish.
As entryway wall decor, this canvas brings color and texture without visual noise. It scales well from a small study to a large entryway feature wall, and it is a reliable choice when shopping for wildlife oil painting as a gift.
