For collectors searching landscape oil painting, Shipping on the Bosphorus, Constantinople is a dependable choice. Painted in layered oils on canvas after Ivan Aivazovsky, this romantic work reads equally well as classic canvas wall art and as a thoughtful housewarming gift.
1900
Oil on panel
Private Collection, USA.
The present view of Constantinople’s historic Arnavutk?y district in the spring of 1900 is among the last works Aivazovsky ever painted, and may even be his final completed painting before his death in May that year. The impressionistic handling of paint is extremely unusual for Aivazovsky and marks an important departure in technique, remarkable at this late stage in his career. The free and liquid brushwork, particularly in the ships’ reflections and the lush slopes beyond the Ottoman mansions, recall the small Normandy seascapes of his French contemporary Eugène Boudin (1824-1898) and the light-filled landscapes of Claude Monet (1840-1926). The bright red flags and azure sea make this one of the most uplifting views of the city that had so enraptured Aivazovsky over the course of his life.
The landscape subject is rebuilt stroke by stroke in oil, giving the finished canvas the depth expected of romantic oil painting wall decor.
Oil on canvas remains the reference standard for romantic reproductions. Our artists apply pigment by hand, blending the landscape tones directly on the surface for depth that a printed landscape oil painting simply cannot match.
romantic canvas wall art is one of the easiest ways to warm a bedroom. Pair this piece with natural linen, dark wood, or brushed brass, and let the hand painted surface do the rest.
