Upgrade your walls with View from Cap Martin with Monaco in the Distance - Ivan Aivazovsky - Hand Painted Oil Painting. Every fine art reproduction is painted entirely by hand, so the surface carries the depth and variation of an original oil painting rather than the flatness of a digital canvas print.
1885
Oil on canvas
61.5 x 96 cm (24 1/4 x 37 3/4 in.)
Remarkably few paintings by Aivazovsky of the C?te d'Azur are known. The present lot describes the sun setting over a romanticised vision of Monte Carlo with the Bay of Roquebrune in the foreground. According to the artist’s inscription on the reverse it was painted in Nice where he is known to have exhibited the following year. It is held in an original Beggrov workshop frame.
In 1884 Claude Monet had travelled to nearby Bordighera. In his correspondence with Rodin, he described his struggle to paint or rather ‘to fence and to wrestle’ with the brilliant sun of the Riviera. He also noted the difficulties of finding motifs and clear views due to the thick vegetation. Aivazovsky was drawn to sweeping vistas and perhaps it was this scarcity of natural vantage points that make this stretch of coast an unusual subject in his work. Painted with his highly characteristic palette including light greens and lilacs, the appearance of the present sunset view of Monaco therefore marks an exceptional opportunity for collectors.
As hallway wall art, the piece pairs naturally with other romantic wall art and with warm neutrals, timber, and soft natural light.
Materials matter for romantic wall decor. That is why this piece is built on artist-grade canvas with lightfast oil colors, applied by hand rather than output from a printer, and sealed for long-term display.
Style it over a fireplace, behind a reading chair, or along a staircase. Wherever it goes, this romantic oil painting wall decor adds the layered color that only a hand painted canvas provides.
