1882
Oil on canvas
Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, Netherlands.
This early painting reflects van Gogh's practice of painting outside in an effort to capture all the elements of nature.
While living in The Hague, van Gogh made regular trips to Scheveningen, a nearby fishing village. He had begun to experiment with oil paint, and he set up his easel on the bleak stretch of beach and worked directly on his canvas in the windblown sand. His strong and bold approach to the composition, using broad horizontal zones to delineate sand, water, and sky, was matched by his thick and expressive application of pigment. His compulsion to capture his observations on the spot reflects his awareness of contemporary Impressionism.
Our artists reproduce this seascape composition in oil on canvas by hand, preserving the tonal range that makes seascape oil painting so sought after for a dining room.
This is a genuine hand painted oil painting, not a canvas print. Our painters match the palette of Beach at Scheveningen in Stormy Weather by eye and build up the seascape forms in thin layers, which is what gives the finished seascape oil painting its luminosity.
Hang this seascape oil painting above a sofa, console, or bed to give a dining room an instant focal point. Its post-impressionist palette works with both minimalist and period interiors, and the piece also makes a considered gift for housewarmings, weddings, and art lovers.
