August-September 1887
Oil on canvas
60 cm (23.62 in.) x 100 cm (39.37 in.)
Kroller-Muller Museum, Otterlo, Netherlands.
Vincent rarely included sunflowers in the bouquets he painted in Paris, but late in the summer of 1887, he used the cut heads of several blooms as subjects for still lifes. The desire to study color seems to have inspired these works. In Sunflowers, Vincent varied the yellows from pale citron to deep ocher, with the stems, centers, and brighter grasslike strokes in the background making a vibrant contrast. He painted the ragged petals and the twisted stems with a vigorous impasto, suggesting the robust quality of the flower.
The still life subject is rebuilt stroke by stroke in oil, giving the finished canvas the depth expected of post-impressionist oil painting wall decor.
From primer to varnish, the work is done manually on artist-grade canvas. The absence of digital printing is deliberate: it keeps the still life brushwork visible and gives the post-impressionist oil painting wall decor a museum-like finish.
As hallway wall art, this canvas brings color and texture without visual noise. It scales well from a small study to a large hallway feature wall, and it is a reliable choice when shopping for still life oil painting as a gift.
