Japonaiserie: Flowering Plum Tree - Vincent van Gogh - Still Life Oil Painting suits both traditional and modern interiors. As a still life oil painting, it works as a standalone focal point or as part of a home office gallery wall, and unlike a print it is genuinely hand painted in oils.
1887
Oil on canvas
55 cm (21.65 in.) x 46 cm (18.11 in.)
Van Gogh Museum, Netherlands.
Based on Hiroshige's The Plum Tree Teahouse at Kameido, Vincent's The Flowering Plum Tree is believed to be the first of the three oil copies he made of Japanese prints. His handling of color, from the bright, yet modulated reds and greens of the background to the delicate, green tinge in the white blossoms, reveals how he tried to emulate the effects of printer's ink in oil. After his arrival in Aries he wrote to his sister Wil that he no longer needed to study Japanese prints, "because I am always telling myself that here I am in Japan."
As office wall decor, the piece pairs naturally with other post-impressionist wall art and with warm neutrals, timber, and soft natural light.
We use a 100% hand-painted process: stretched artist-grade canvas, layered oil pigment, and a final protective varnish. There are no inkjet prints or mechanical reproductions in this collection — just a painted still life artwork made to order.
Build a home office gallery wall around this still life oil painting, or let it stand alone as a single statement. The hand painted canvas finish keeps the still life composition looking intentional in both classic and contemporary rooms.
