The Story Behind the Painting

1890
Oil on canvas
64 cm (25.2 in.) x 81 cm (31.89 in.)
National Gallery - London, England.

Van Gogh was a patient at the asylum at St-Rémy, near Arles, from May 1889 to May 1890. During this time he was restricted to working in the asylum's grounds, and shortly after his arrival he described the 'abandoned gardens' in which 'the grass grows tall and unkempt, mixed with all kinds of weeds'. This view of these gardens was painted at the end of the painter's stay at the asylum.

The fine art subject is rebuilt stroke by stroke in oil, giving the finished canvas the depth expected of post-impressionist oil painting wall decor.

How It Is Made

From primer to varnish, the work is done manually on artist-grade canvas. The absence of digital printing is deliberate: it keeps the fine art brushwork visible and gives the post-impressionist oil painting wall decor a museum-like finish.
