Vincent van Gogh completed The Dance Hall in Arles in 1888, while Paul Gauguin was living with him. In a letter to his younger brother Theo, Vincent van Gogh expressed a discomfort at the profound influence Gauguin was having on his art but admitted that he was considering the older painter's advice.
Vincent van Gogh remained profoundly attached to his need for firsthand observation of nature, but in The Dance Hall in Arles he demonstrated his ability to assimilate new aesthetic ideas. By employing a sinuous contour line that isolates each hue into a separate cell of color, van Gogh created a flat decorative effect in the synthetic manner favored by Paul Gauguin's young followers.
In late 1888, Vincent van Gogh famously mutilated his own ear. After returning from the hospital, he completed several paintings.
As entryway wall decor, the piece pairs naturally with other post-impressionist wall art and with warm neutrals, timber, and soft natural light.
This is a genuine hand painted oil painting, not a canvas print. Our painters match the palette of The Dance Hall in Arles by eye and build up the figurative forms in thin layers, which is what gives the finished portrait oil painting its luminosity.
Hang this portrait oil painting above a sofa, console, or bed to give an entryway an instant focal point. Its post-impressionist palette works with both minimalist and period interiors, and the piece also makes a considered gift for housewarmings, weddings, and art lovers.
Order The Dance Hall in Arles as a hand painted oil painting on canvas and add lasting post-impressionist character to your entryway. Custom sizes, a digital proof before dispatch, and secure worldwide shipping are included.
