At a Glance

The Zouave by Vincent van Gogh is one of those images that never dates. Our studio recreates it as a hand painted oil painting — textured, color-rich, and ready to hang as canvas wall art in a hallway, study, or reception area.

Composition & Subject

1888
Oil on canvas
65 cm (25.59 in.) x 54 cm (21.26 in.)
Van Gogh Museum, Netherlands.

Vincent van Gogh painted The Zouave in 1888. Van Gogh's portrait of a soldier in his uniform signaled a change in his approach to color.

The paint is applied thickly, in broad areas, in heavily saturated tones of green, red, and blue that appear more sober than bright. A division of French-Algerian soldiers billeted in Arles, France, the Zouaves were notorious for their recklessness on and off the battlefield. Van Gogh asserted that the subject inspired the palette, which he described as "a savage combination of incongruous tones."

As hallway wall art, the piece pairs naturally with other post-impressionist wall art and with warm neutrals, timber, and soft natural light.

Materials & Craftsmanship

This is a genuine hand painted oil painting, not a canvas print. Our painters match the palette of The Zouave by eye and build up the fine art forms in thin layers, which is what gives the finished fine art oil painting its luminosity.
