Oil on canvas
Van Gogh Museum, Netherlands.
In his first six months in Paris, Vincent responded to his exciting new environment through changes in his art. He lightened his palette and worked swiftly with confidence, developing a more spontaneous approach. His touch became subtle and expressive, and he applied his paint freely, achieving a texture as rich as his tone. Vase with Autumn Asters marks a synthesis in his Paris period. Working within a close range of pink, rose, red, and brown, Vincent creates a pleasing harmony of color. Pale yellow blossoms, dull green stems, and dabs of blue on the table top provide a subtle contrast. The earthenware jug holding the asters remained in the family and is now in the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.
As living room wall decor, the piece pairs naturally with other post-impressionist wall art and with warm neutrals, timber, and soft natural light.
Expect subtle, hand-made variation rather than factory uniformity. Each still life canvas is painted with oils, allowed to cure properly, and inspected before it is approved for shipment.
Wondering where still life oil painting looks best? Try a living room mantel, a dining room sideboard, or a hallway gallery wall. The still life subject reads clearly from a distance and rewards close viewing up near.
